The Right/Left‑hand thread nipple is a clever plumbing part designed to join two fixed sections of pipe without rotating either one. It acts like a union by tightening, creating a robust in‑line connection.
What is this Right/Left‑hand nipple used for?
This fitting has a standard right‑hand thread on one side and a left‑hand thread on the other. The principle is simple and effective:
- Screw each end by hand a few turns into the two fixed female fittings to be joined: a standard right‑hand female on one side and a right/left‑hand coupling on the other.
- Then use a wrench on the central hex. Turning in one direction (the right‑hand tightening direction) advances both threads simultaneously, drawing the two pipes together to form a perfectly tight, solid joint.
It’s the traditional, extremely robust solution for joining two fixed pipes, or for inserting a valve into a rigid line. It serves the same function as a classic 3‑piece union.
Technical Features (EN 10242 Compliance)
Manufactured to EN 10242 for optimal quality and reliability.
- High‑Quality Material: Malleable cast iron (EN‑GJMW‑400‑5), known for high strength and durability.
- Anti‑Corrosion Protection: Hot‑dip galvanized (approx. 70 µm) for a long service life.
- Opposed Sealing Threads (BSPT): Combines a right‑hand male taper thread (R) and a left‑hand male taper thread (R‑LH) to ISO 7‑1. The taper profile seals directly on the threads during tightening.
Indicative Dimensions
Approximate dimensions and weights for common sizes:
Thread | L – Overall Length (mm) | Approx. Weight |
---|---|---|
1/2'' (15x21 mm) | ~ 50 mm | ~ 0.09 kg |
3/4'' (20x27 mm) | ~ 55 mm | ~ 0.13 kg |
1'' (26x34 mm) | ~ 65 mm | ~ 0.20 kg |
Installation Tip
Apply a suitable sealant (hemp, PTFE tape, etc.) to both threads before assembly. Identify the left‑hand end (often marked “LH” or with a notch) so you start on the correct side.
