Z dimension: understanding assembly length

Why the Z dimension exists

When assembling a network of threaded pipes and malleable cast iron fittings (EN 10242 type), part of the pipe enters the fitting during threading. This "absorbed" portion is no longer visible once the assembly is complete, but it changes the final length of the assembly.

To avoid surprises (assembly too long, too short, center-to-center distances that do not match), a standardised dimension is used: Z. This assembly length is used to calculate the pipe length to use before assembly.

How to read Z depending on the type of fitting

  • Elbow / tee type fittings: Z corresponds to the effective distance between the end of the pipe once threaded and the axis of the fitting.
  • Coupling (female-female): Z corresponds to the effective distance between the two pipe ends when each pipe is threaded into the coupling.

Usage example

You want to achieve a precise distance between the axis of a tee and the axis of an elbow. If you cut a pipe to the measured "center-to-center" distance without accounting for Z, the final assembly will not match the expected overall dimensions.

Engagement length: the basis for calculating Z

The calculation of Z relies on a standard value called engagement length (often referred to as "length of coupling"). In simple terms: it is the length of thread that enters the fitting when the assembly is correctly completed.

6" DN150 150×165 40
Key takeaway

These values serve as a calculation basis. In practice, the effective depth may vary slightly (thread tolerances, sealing product, tightening). The goal is a predictable and reproducible assembly.

Dimensions a, b, c...: understanding the geometry of a fitting

To calculate Z, you combine:

  • geometric dimensions of the fitting (a, b, c...): distances defined by the fitting design (between faces, axes, etc.) and published in dimensional tables;
  • the engagement length (EN 10242), used as a reference value.

Example: if a 1" elbow has a dimension a and the 1" engagement length is 17 mm, then Z is calculated from these two pieces of information (Z is derived from published dimensions).

Calculating the Z dimension by fitting type

General principle: Z = (geometric dimension of the fitting) - (corresponding engagement length)

1) Equal elbow (same size on both sides)

  • Formula: Z = a - e
  • Example (1"): if a = 38 mm and e(1") = 17 mm, then Z = 21 mm
  • Interpretation: 17 mm are taken up by the engagement; 21 mm of "effective" length remain.

2) Reduced elbow (different sizes)

  • Formula: Z1 = a - e(size 1) and Z2 = b - e(size 2)
  • Example (1" / 3/4"): a = 35 mm, b = 36 mm, e(1") = 17 mm, e(3/4") = 15 mm
    -> Z1 = 18 mm (1" side) and Z2 = 21 mm (3/4" side)
  • Interpretation: each side has its own Z.

3) Coupling (female-female)

  • Formula: Z = a - 2 x e
  • Example (1/2"): if a = 36 mm and e(1/2") = 13 mm, then Z = 10 mm
  • Interpretation: two pipes each enter by e; what remains between pipe ends is Z.

Calculating the length of an assembly with a pipe

Once Z is known, you can calculate the pipe length L to cut to achieve a desired final distance.

Principle: L = (distance A-B) - (sum of lengths absorbed by the fittings)

Example: achieving a precise center-to-center distance

  • Center-to-center distance with a pipe L of 1000mm, a tee and an elbow in 3/4" (20x27mm)
  • Two ends with Z = 18 mm each
  • Calculation: L = 1000 + (18 + 18) = 1036 mm

Example of assembly dimensions of a threaded pipe with fittings

Additionally, you can calculate the edge-to-edge (overall) dimension at the outer edges of the pipes by simply adding half the diameter of the pipe used on each side:

  • Edge-to-edge distance with a pipe L of 1000mm, a tee and an elbow in 3/4" (20x27mm)
  • Calculation: LOA = 1000 + (18 + 18) + (27/2 + 27/2) = 1063mm
Assembly dimensions of a threaded steel pipe and cast iron fittings

Why actual depth may vary (tightening, sealing, tolerances)

The engagement values serve as a reference, but the actual depth may vary slightly, because:

  • threads have tolerances;
  • the sealing product (PTFE, hemp + paste) changes the threading behaviour;
  • tightening is often done in two stages: by hand then with a tool.

Example: PTFE (more "slippery") and hemp (more "resistant") can result in a slightly different final orientation at equivalent torque. For decorative applications, a trial assembly improves repeatability.

Curved elbows EN 10242: changing direction smoothly

In the black cast iron fittings collection, these curved elbows allow a more gradual change of direction than a "sharp" elbow. Depending on the references, there are different thread configurations (male/female, female/female, male/male), which affect the overall dimensions and the pipe lengths to plan for.

Plumbing applications

They are used when a smoother change of direction is needed. The flow is less abrupt, which can reduce turbulence and pressure drops compared to a very sharp angle, while maintaining clean geometry and standard threaded connections.

Decorative applications

They are valued for their smoother lines: they visually soften a structure (wall brackets, clothing rails, shelves) and give a more "designed" look than a right angle. They can also reduce local mechanical stresses at the change of direction.

2) Large radius 45° elbows

Large radius 45° elbows allow for a more gradual offset than a 90° elbow. They are often chosen to smooth out a routing path, or to create an angle in several steps.

Dimensions of small radius 90° and 45° elbows (90, 90R, 92, 92R, 94, 96, 98, 120)

In this section, we group the "standard" (small radius) elbows and the demountable elbows (with union), used in both plumbing and decoration. The objective is to choose the right geometry (90° or 45°), the right type of thread (F/F, M/F, M/M) and, when necessary, a reduced or union version to facilitate installation and maintenance. The dimensions presented here apply equally to both black cast iron and galvanised versions, for the same size.

Reduced coupling M/F - Ref. code 246

This male/female bell-shaped fitting allows connecting a female thread to a smaller male thread. In plumbing, its internal geometry is designed to reduce the diameter of an installation while minimising pressure losses. In industrial decoration, its softened shape offers a highly sought-after aesthetic transition for tapering a tubular structure, creating the base of a lamp or the foot of a piece of furniture.

Family: Lock nut and Extension piece

Lock nut - Ref. code 310

This flat lock nut with hexagonal socket is designed to lock and secure a threaded assembly. In plumbing, it is essential for locking a fitting in a precise orientation or for ensuring tightening during a wall pass-through. In industrial decoration, it allows securing parts without having to screw all the way to the end of the thread, while adding a raw mechanical finish that is very aesthetically pleasing to your lamps and furniture.

Extension piece M/F (Extension tube) - Ref. code 526

This male/female fitting acts as an extender. In plumbing, it is very practical for extending a threaded outlet by a precise length (30, 40 or 50 mm) in order to pass through a wall thickness or to adjust a connection without constraint. In industrial decoration, it serves as a spacer or small extension to perfectly adjust the dimensions of your creations (lamp offsets, furniture legs) without having to cut and thread a small custom-length pipe section.

Internal nipple - Ref. code 531

This male/male fitting, fully threaded along its entire length (also called "internal nipple"), is the key component for invisible assemblies. In plumbing, it allows joining two tapped (female) elements end to end with minimal footprint. In industrial decoration, it is the essential trick for butting two female fittings tightly against each other without leaving any gap or visible thread, thus creating massive and continuous joints.

Family: Union fittings

Union F/F with tapered seat - Ref. code 340

This three-part demountable fitting (union) with a tapered seat allows connecting two male threads while offering the ability to easily disassemble them afterwards. In plumbing, it is essential for flanking equipment requiring maintenance (valves, pumps) without having to dismantle the entire piping system. In industrial decoration, it is very useful for designing complex structures, large modular furniture, or pieces that need to be disassembled for transport.

Tapered union coupling M/F - Ref. code 341

This three-part demountable fitting (union) with a tapered seat has one male end and one female end. In plumbing, it is perfect for connecting elements that will need to be removed later (such as a filter or a pump) without having to saw or dismantle the entire pipe network. In industrial decoration, its massive central nut provides genuine mechanical character, while allowing a structure to be closed in a loop (such as a frame) or making a large piece of furniture demountable for easier transport.
