[DIY] Industrial Ceiling Clothes Rail in Black Pipes

A clothes rail hung from the ceiling

Two flanges on the ceiling, two drops, two elbows, one rail: this clothes rail takes no floor or wall space at all. Under a sloping ceiling, in a laundry room, above a low cabinet or in a hallway too narrow for a freestanding rack, it hangs clothes where nothing else fits. Ø 27 mm steel pipes and cast-iron fittings, all painted matte black: the pipework look, without a single part that serves no purpose.

This model belongs to our Deco range: fittings and pipes painted matte black, lighter than genuine plumbing parts. It is made for moderate loads and indoor use; for heavy-duty storage, our racks in genuine plumbing pipes are the better choice.

DIY kit: delivered in parts

The kit comes in parts and screws together entirely by hand, no tools needed — only fixing to the ceiling calls for a drill. It comes apart just as easily, to move house or change the height.

Dimensions

The width shown is the overall width, elbow to elbow: the rail plus 6 cm. The centre distance between the two ceiling flanges — the measurement to mark out before drilling — is the rail plus 3 cm. Hangers slide along the free part of the rail, between the elbows; allow 1 cm per slim hanger and 2 to 3 cm per thick coat.

The height below ceiling shown runs from the ceiling to the lowest point of the elbows. The rail's centre line sits exactly one drop-pipe length below the ceiling. A long coat needs about 130 cm clear below the rail; a shirt, 90 cm.

7 heights, from 63 cm to 173 cm, use two drop pipes screwed end to end into an equal coupling, supplied: the joint stays visible, like one more fitting, and the rail's centre line sits 1 cm lower than the two pipes added together. The shorter pipe goes at the top, near the ceiling; the table gives both lengths.

In depth, the whole assembly fits within the flange diameter: 7 cm.

Fixing

The rail hangs from its two flanges, each screwed to the ceiling with three screws. The whole load passes through those six screws: the nature of the ceiling matters more than anything else.

Fixing hardware is not supplied: choose it to suit your substrate, which alone decides how well the kit holds. Allow one fixing per flange hole, so three per flange. In concrete, brick or solid wood, standard wood screws and plugs are fine. In plasterboard, use metal expansion anchors and, wherever possible, find a stud or a joist behind the board. If you are unsure about your substrate, ask a professional.

Care and precautions

Matte black paint is more delicate than a varnish: assemble the parts by hand, without pliers or a wrench, and clean them with a soft dry cloth, never an abrasive.

Dimensions are calculated from the fittings' sizes; tightening each thread gives a variation of about ± 5 mm per dimension. Accessories and clothes shown in the photos are not included.
