The Right/Left‑hand threaded coupling is a technical part designed to join and tension two male‑ended pipes or rods, one of which has a left‑hand thread. It’s commonly used with a Right/Left‑hand equal nipple.
What is this Right/Left‑hand coupling used for?
It works on the “turnbuckle” principle. It has a right‑hand internal thread on one side and a left‑hand internal thread on the other. The mechanism is simple and powerful:
- Screw the two male‑threaded pipes or rods into each end of the coupling.
- By turning the coupling body with a wrench, the opposed internal threads draw both ends together, creating an extremely rigid, perfectly aligned joint.
It’s used to connect two fixed pipe lengths or to tension metal structures.
Technical Features (EN 10242 Compliance)
Manufactured to EN 10242 for top‑tier quality and reliability.
- High‑Quality Material: Malleable cast iron (EN‑GJMW‑400‑5), known for high tensile and pressure strength.
- Anti‑Corrosion Protection: Hot‑dip galvanized (approx. 70 µm) for a long service life.
- Opposed Internal Threads (BSP): Combines a right‑hand parallel female thread (Rp) and a left‑hand parallel female thread (Rp‑LH) to ISO 7‑1. They are designed to receive male taper threads (R).
Indicative Dimensions
Approximate dimensions and weights for common sizes:
Thread | L – Overall Length (mm) | Approx. Weight |
---|---|---|
1/2'' (15x21 mm) | ~ 80 mm | ~ 0.18 kg |
3/4'' (20x27 mm) | ~ 90 mm | ~ 0.27 kg |
1'' (26x34 mm) | ~ 100 mm | ~ 0.42 kg |
Installation Tip
Apply sealant to both male threads before inserting them into the coupling. Start by hand to ensure proper thread engagement, then use an adjustable wrench to turn the coupling body and complete tightening.
