Which black steel pipes should I choose for my decorative plumbing project?

Which pipes to choose for my plumbing decorating project:

Why choose plumbing pipes for my project:

Black round threaded plumbing pipes are Thean economical and simple solution for simply and quickly creating structures for furniture, decorative objects, or anything else, without welding, and with a minimum of tools (but with some effort all the same). It's the ideal option for all DIYers at home who don't have a workshop full of tools and don't want to get into arc welding in their bathroom.

Pipes or pipes, are round, hollow pieces of welded steel. They are also known as steel coils or steel nipples.

While they are plumbing parts by destination, steel and cast iron pipes and fittings can be used perfectly for decoration and furniture, the parts combining both quality, robustness and a very aesthetic finish. The "plumbing" use is only one of the uses that can be made of these pieces of piping, in the same way that wood is not only used for heating!

The types of steel pipe offered on the site:

All our metal coils, are selected for their aesthetic qualities, however, these are real plumbing parts, so they have small flaws, marks, marks, which make the charm and character of the pieces. No fake industrial decoration that's too clean or too new, just the real thing and the authentic.

The Pipes are threaded, i.e. the ends of the pipe are "threaded" (male) which allow screwing with threaded black cast or galvanised fittings (female).

The threads on black steel pipes are BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper) or "Tapered Gas", i.e. the thread is slightly narrower at the edge of the pipe and widens thereafter. This allows a degree of flexibility when fitting to achieve the desired result in terms of tightness and to adjust the dimensions.

We offer 2 types of metal pipes on the site:

  • Black steel pipes
The black finish provides limited protection against corrosion, it is definitely not suitable for outdoor use and not recommended for use in very humid environments (towel racks for example).

  • Galvanised steel pipes
Galvanisation offers superior corrosion protection. If the shiny appearance puts you off, a light coat of paint will give the desired look.

Please note that these 2 terms do not refer to the colour of the pipes, as black steel pipes can have a variable finish from grey to black depending on the diameters and lengths (please consult us or the product sheets for more details).

Black steel pipe sizes:

What diameter for my black steel Pipes:

These pipes can be used with any of our fittings as long as they are the same size:

  • ½'' Pipe with ½'' Fittings or ¾'' Pipe with ¾'' Fittings.

either

  • 15x21 mm Pipe with 15x21 mm fittings or 20x27 mm Pipe with 20x27 mm fittings.

On the site, you can find pipes with outer diameters of 17 mm, 21 mm, 27 mm, 34 mm or 42 mm (rounded to actual diameter).

The 12/17 mm diameter (⅜'') is best reserved for decorative projects. Whether you're making a small structure to hang on the wall, a small plumbing lamp or a jewellery holder made from fittings, for example.

The 15/21 mm (½'') pipe diameter is ideal for most deco projects and less massive plumbing furniture projects. The reasonable outside diameter of the Pipes (21 mm), avoids looking too massive, while still offering significant rigidity.

The most versatile pipe diameter is 20/27 mm (¾''), suitable for both decorative projects and larger pieces of furniture or fittings, such as plumbing pipe racks, bookcases, shelves, pipe table legs, but will also allow you to make pipe lamps, etc...The diameter of the pipes (27mm) is large enough to have a significant visual impact and lend an authentic industrial look to the project.

The 26/34mm (1'') pipe diameter is more massive, but also heavier, for greater impact and impressive appearance.

The 33/42 mm (1'' ¼) pipe diameter is arguably the most spectacular. If you don't want your project to go unnoticed! Be careful, large diameter also means large weight!

Table of diameters:

Size inches Size mm Nominal diameter
(DN)
Outer diameter
of Pipes (approx)
3/8'' 12/17 mm 17 mm
1/2'' 15/21 mm DN15 21 mm
3/4'' 20/27 mm DN20 27 mm
1'' 26/34 mm DN25 34 mm
1'' 1/4 33/42 mm DN32 42 mm

What lengths for my black steel Pipes:

You can find the following lengths for most pipe diameters on the site, from short lengths to longer lengths: 40 mm (4 cm), 50 mm (5 cm), 60 mm (6 cm), 80mm (8 cm), 100 mm (10 cm), 120mm (12 cm), 150 mm (15 cm), 180 mm (18 cm), 200 mm (20 cm), 250 mm (25 cm), 300 mm (30 cm), 400 mm (40 cm), 500 mm (50 cm), 700 mm (70 cm), 850 mm (85 cm), 1000 mm (100 cm), 1250 mm (125 cm), 1500 mm (150 cm), 2000 mm (200 cm).

Custom black steel pipe cutting service:

No size fits your project? No problem! We offer a bespoke cutting service for black steel pipes and galvanised steel pipes. The cut is made to the centimetre, with a tolerance of 2 mm, from a minimum length of 200 mm (20 cm).

It's sometimes difficult to know to what length your bespoke black steel pipe should be cut. You can therefore tell us your final assembly:

tube(s) + fitting(s) and the total size required, the black steel pipe will be cut and threaded to size to achieve the total size required for the project.

For example:
flange + pipe + flange = 440 mm

All these dimensions include the threads on each side of the black steel pipes.

Fittings are screwed onto the pipes from 10 mm (1 cm) to 15 mm (1.5 cm). Manual screwing on 10 mm (1 cm) and up to 15 mm (1.5 cm) with the help of tools.

What fittings should I screw on with my black steel pipes?

Our pipes, whether black steel or galvanised steel, can be combined with all our fittings in black cast iron, galvanised cast iron or brass.

All the couplings, whether elbows, couplings, plugs or others, can be assembled with the Pipes: any combination is possible!

Attention, one point to note, all fittings screw on in the same direction: to the right.

If your structure includes closed shapes (a square or a rectangle, for example), it is recommended that you use union fittings, which will ensure that the fittings are tightened correctly and that you have a rigid plumbing pipe structure.
