A cross base for the tabletop of your choice

Give your living room some character with this coffee table base in an authentic industrial style. Its cross-shaped base, assembled from genuine cast iron plumbing pipe fittings and steel pipes, forms a sturdy, strikingly geometric frame onto which you fix the tabletop of your choice (wood, glass, etc.). End table, side table or a proper living-room coffee table: it's up to you to build the piece that suits your loft, workshop or steampunk interior.

Authentic Industrial Character

Handmade in Annecy, Haute-Savoie, from genuine plumbing parts, each base is one of a kind. Four legs (coupling, pipe, tee, pipe and flange) are joined at the centre by a cross and four horizontal pipes, for a screw-assembled, weld-free base that is solid and hard-wearing. The leg couplings are fitted with black plastic inserts that protect your floors.

Choosing the right size and height

Size follows the tabletop you plan to fit: allow an overhang of 8 to 15 cm on each side. A 55 × 55 cm base therefore carries a 70 to 80 cm tabletop comfortably. The smaller the overhang, the steadier the table.

Height follows your seating: 32 cm for a low-slung living room, 42 cm for most sofas — the most versatile — and 52 cm for a deep sofa or an end table. The figure given is for the base alone: add the thickness of your tabletop for the finished height (42 cm + a 3 cm top = 45 cm).

Key Features

Available in 18 size combinations (square footprint) — choose yours above: width/depth from 35 to 95 cm, height of 32, 42 or 52 cm.

The same base, other pipe diameters

This cross-leg base comes in three pipe diameters: Ø 27 mm (this page), Ø 34 mm and Ø 42 mm. The thicker the pipe, the heavier, steadier and bolder the base; the thinner it is, the more discreet the silhouette. The same frame is also offered at dining-table height (74 cm).

Details and Features

The metal is protected by a clear varnish that preserves its raw look; care for it with a soft, dry cloth, without water or abrasive cleaners. For indoor use only.

The photos showing a tabletop are for illustration only: the tabletop is not included.

The materials may show slight differences in appearance compared to the photographs. These imperfections, which make each piece unique, are part of the raw, authentic and unmistakably industrial character of every item sold by Home Invasion.

Made to order in Annecy, Haute-Savoie, France.

Detailed dimensions

The letters refer to the drawings below. All dimensions in centimetres; dimension A is measured from the outer edge of one flange to the opposite flange. Centre distances (B, C) are measured between flange centres — useful for drilling the top.

Tolerance: these are nominal dimensions. How far each fitting is tightened, together with casting tolerances, gives about ±5 mm of variation on each dimension. Measure the assembled base before drilling your tabletop or having it cut.

Would you rather build it yourself?

There is nothing sealed about this base: it is a fully screwed assembly, with no welding and no glue. Every part it is made of is in our catalogue and can be ordered separately — enough to build it with an adjustable spanner, change the lengths, or reuse only part of it.

The assembled base, for its part, arrives varnished, checked and fitted with its floor-protection inserts, which are not sold separately.

Adding castors

Castors with a 3/4″ fitting stem screw straight into the bottom sockets, with no drilling and no mounting plate: it is the same thread as the legs, nothing else is needed. You need four, one per leg.

They raise the base: take the castor's overall height minus the roughly 1.5 cm screwed into the socket, which comes to 9 cm more with a 75 mm wheel and 11.5 cm with a 100 mm wheel.

A 42 cm coffee table therefore becomes 51 cm: the height of a side table you move with one hand to run the vacuum underneath.
