The H-frame at table height, in Ø 34 mm pipe

This is the reference format for a dining table or a large desk: four legs at the corners, nothing in the middle, and room for your knees. The 1 inch black steel pipe (34 mm outside diameter) gives the base the stiffness it needs over long spans, up to 132 cm. Malleable cast iron fittings, varnished black finish.

Six cast iron tees and a set of threads

The central stretcher links two tees; from each of them two half-rails run out to the leg tees. A 50 cm pipe rises from every tee to the tabletop flange, a short pipe drops to the coupling and its plastic insert. No welding, no glue: the base is screwed together by hand in Annecy.

Choosing your size

Size is read on the footprint. Allow 8 to 15 cm of tabletop overhang on each side: a 132 × 66 cm base carries a top of about 150 × 85 cm, seating six to eight. For a desk, a smaller overhang at the back lets you push the furniture against the wall.

The height is fixed: 75 cm for the base alone. Add the thickness of your tabletop to get the final height — 75 + 2 cm = 77 cm, 75 + 3 cm = 78 cm. A dining table usually sits between 74 and 78 cm: a 2 to 3 cm top puts you right in that range. The underside of the top stays clear at 75 cm from the floor, which is 27 to 30 cm above a standard chair seat.

Tabletop thickness depends on the span between the legs. Up to the 102 × 56 cm size, 18 mm plywood is enough; from 112 × 56 cm upwards, allow 27 mm solid wood or the equivalent. These figures correspond to a deflection below 1/300 of the span under a 100 kg/m² load — the dimensions table gives the detail for every size.

Key features

Available in 9 versions, to be chosen above: footprint from 52 × 36 cm to 132 × 66 cm, base height 75 cm.

The same base, other pipe diameters

This H-frame base comes in three pipe diameters: Ø 27 mm, Ø 34 mm (this page) and Ø 42 mm. The thicker the pipe, the heavier, steadier and bolder the base; the thinner it is, the more discreet the silhouette. The same frame is also offered at coffee-table height (32, 42 or 52 cm).

Details and features

The finish is a clear varnish: it protects the metal without colouring it. A soft, dry cloth is all it takes — no water, no detergent, no abrasives. For indoor use only.

In the lifestyle shots the tabletop is there for illustration: it is not supplied with the base.

Cast iron and drawn steel are never exactly identical from one piece to the next. These small differences from the photographs are the signature of the industrial, authentic character of every Home Invasion base.

Every base is assembled to order in Annecy, France.

Detailed dimensions

The letters refer to the drawings below. All dimensions in centimetres; dimension A is measured from the outer edge of one flange to the opposite flange. Centre distances (B, D) are measured between flange centres — useful for drilling the top.

Tolerance: these are nominal dimensions. How far each fitting is tightened, together with casting tolerances, gives about ± 5 mm of variation on each dimension. Measure the base once assembled before drilling your tabletop or having it cut.

For cutting the tabletop and fixing it to the flanges, our tutorial building an industrial-style desk from plumbing pipe takes you through it step by step.

Would you rather build it yourself?

Nothing here is welded: the base is a set of fittings screwed into one another, which you can redo, extend or take apart. Every part is sold individually in our catalogue, and the pipe lengths are standard references, not special cuts.
