Dining table, desk or console: the H-frame base in Ø 27 mm

Four legs at the corners, two rails and a central stretcher: the H-frame is the structure that leaves the most freedom on the tabletop. Built from 3/4 inch black steel pipe (27 mm outside diameter) and malleable cast iron fittings, it comes here at dining height. Nine sizes cover the narrow 51 × 35 cm console as well as the 131 × 65 cm eight-seater, taking in the desk on the way.

A plumbing H, screwed by hand

Two tees hold the central stretcher, four more cap the legs. Between them run black steel half-rails. Each leg rises to a fixing flange drilled with three holes and drops to a coupling fitted with a plastic insert. The whole thing is assembled in Annecy and comes apart completely.

Which size for which use?

Size is chosen from the use: up to 71 × 45 cm you are looking at a console or a side table; from 81 × 45 to 101 × 55 cm, at a desk or a four-seater; beyond that, at a full dining table. Allow 8 to 15 cm of tabletop overhang on each side.

The height is fixed: 74 cm for the base alone. Add the thickness of your tabletop to get the final height — 74 + 2 cm = 76 cm, 74 + 3 cm = 77 cm. A dining table usually sits between 74 and 78 cm: a 2 to 3 cm top puts you right in that range. The underside of the top stays clear at 74 cm from the floor, which is 27 to 30 cm above a standard chair seat.

Tabletop thickness depends on the span between the legs. Up to the 101 × 55 cm size, 18 mm plywood is enough; from 111 × 55 cm upwards, allow 27 mm solid wood or the equivalent. These figures correspond to a deflection below 1/300 of the span under a 100 kg/m² load — the dimensions table gives the detail for every size.

The same base, other pipe diameters

This H-frame base comes in three pipe diameters: Ø 27 mm (this page), Ø 34 mm and Ø 42 mm. The thicker the pipe, the heavier, steadier and bolder the base; the thinner it is, the more discreet the silhouette. The same frame is also offered at coffee-table height (32, 42 or 52 cm).

Details and features

A clear varnish protects the cast iron and the steel while leaving the raw look of the metal visible. Wipe it with a dry cloth; avoid water and abrasive cleaners. Indoor use only.

Pictures featuring a tabletop are staged; only the base is sold.

Slight variations in shade or surface are normal on cast parts: they belong to the raw, authentic character of Home Invasion products, and make every base one of a kind.

Built to order in our workshop in Annecy, France.

Detailed dimensions

The letters refer to the drawings below. All dimensions in centimetres; dimension A is measured from the outer edge of one flange to the opposite flange. Centre distances (B, D) are measured between flange centres — useful for drilling the top.

Tolerance: these are nominal dimensions. How far each fitting is tightened, together with casting tolerances, gives about ± 5 mm of variation on each dimension. Measure the base once assembled before drilling your tabletop or having it cut.

For cutting the tabletop and fixing it to the flanges, our tutorial building an industrial-style desk from plumbing pipe takes you through it step by step.

Would you rather build it yourself?

Nothing here is welded: the base is a set of fittings screwed into one another, which you can redo, extend or take apart. Every part is sold individually in our catalogue, and the pipe lengths are standard references, not special cuts.

The assembled base, for its part, arrives varnished, checked and fitted with its floor-protection inserts, which are not sold separately.

Adding castors

Castors with a 3/4″ fitting stem screw straight into the bottom sockets, with no drilling and no mounting plate: it is the same thread as the legs, nothing else is needed. You need four, one per leg.

They raise the base: take the castor's overall height minus the roughly 1.5 cm screwed into the socket, which comes to 9 cm more with a 75 mm wheel and 11.5 cm with a 100 mm wheel.

On a dining-table base they carry the top to around 83 cm — worktop height, not dining height. That is exactly what makes it a kitchen island or a tall trolley you roll from one wall to the other.
