A base designed for the desk, in Ø 27 mm pipe
Four legs at the corners, two side rails and a single tie bar — moved to the back, just under the top. This U-frame is the only base in our range designed first for seated work: nothing crosses in front of your legs, nothing lies on the floor, and the rear bar doubles as a cable rail. Built from 3/4 inch black steel pipe (27 mm outside diameter) and malleable cast iron fittings, it carries the top at 71.5 cm, i.e. 74 cm once a 25 mm top is fitted: the reference height for desks. Fifteen sizes, from the small 81 × 51 cm desk to the 161 × 71 cm worktop.
Top not included. This base is sold on its own: you fit the top of your choice (wood, glass, worktop).
Two tees, two distributors, no welding
The two front legs carry a tee; the two rear legs a 4-way distributor, the fitting that takes both the side rail and the rear bar. Each leg rises from a long pipe to its fitting, then a short pipe to the flange that holds the top; at the bottom, a socket with a plastic insert protects the floor. Everything is hand-screwed in Annecy, nothing is welded, and the base comes fully apart.
Which size for which desk?
The size follows the top: allow 8 to 15 cm of overhang on each side in width, 4 to 8 cm in depth. A 111 × 51 cm base thus carries the classic 120 × 60 cm desk; the 131 × 61 cm a 140 × 70 top; the 161 × 71 cm a 180 × 80 worktop for two screens. As the side rails are the only elements under the top, you can sit anywhere between the legs.
The height is fixed: 71.5 cm for the base alone. Add the thickness of your top to get the final height — 71.5 + 2.5 cm = 74 cm, 71.5 + 4 cm = 75.5 cm. The office desk standard (EN 527-1) sets a fixed worktop at 74 cm, give or take 2 cm: a 2 to 4 cm top puts you right in that range.
The rail sits high. The two side rails and the rear bar run 54.4 cm above the floor, 17.1 cm below the top: nothing at foot level, the vacuum cleaner passes and the chair rolls freely. The rear bar, against the wall, doubles as a rail for the power strip and cables.
Tabletop thickness depends on the span between the legs. Up to the 101 × 71 cm size, 18 mm plywood is enough; from 111 × 51 cm upwards, allow 27 mm solid wood or the equivalent. These figures correspond to a deflection below 1/300 of the span under a 100 kg/m² load — the dimensions table gives the detail for every size.
Key features
Available in 15 versions, to be chosen above: footprint from 81 × 51 cm to 161 × 71 cm, base height 71 cm.
| Pipes | black steel 3/4" (20 × 27), giving an outside diameter of 27 mm — see the table of steel pipe diameters |
|---|---|

| Finish | clear varnish applied to the cast iron and the steel alike, leaving the raw metal visible |
| Colour | Grey / anthracite grey depending on the light |
| Tabletop | not included — the Ø 70 mm flanges are drilled with 3 holes to screw on the tabletop of your choice, wood or glass (choosing a floor flange) |
| Flange spacing (centre-to-centre) | approximately the dimension minus 7 cm, in length as well as in depth |
| Floor protection | black plastic inserts under each leg |
| Assembly | delivered part-assembled — a few fittings to screw together on arrival (how to screw threaded fittings together), then fix your tabletop to the flanges |
| Weight | 8.6 to 10.7 kg depending on the version (table below) |
The same base, other pipe diameters
This desk frame comes in three pipe diameters: Ø 27 mm (this page), Ø 34 mm and Ø 42 mm. The thicker the pipe, the heavier, steadier and bolder the base; the thinner it is, the more discreet the silhouette. For a dining table or a console, look instead at the H-frame base at table height.
Details and features
The metal is protected by a clear varnish that preserves its raw look: care for it with a soft, dry cloth, without water or abrasive cleaners. For indoor use only.
The photos showing a tabletop are for illustration only: the tabletop is not included.
The materials may show slight differences in appearance compared to the photographs. These imperfections, which make each piece unique, are part of the raw, authentic and unmistakably industrial character of every item sold by Home Invasion.
Assembled to order in Annecy, France.
Detailed dimensions
The letters refer to the drawings below. All dimensions in centimetres; dimension A is measured from the outer edge of one flange to the opposite flange. Centre distances (B, D) are measured between flange centres — useful for drilling the top.
Tolerance: these are nominal dimensions. How far each fitting is tightened, together with casting tolerances, gives about ± 5 mm of variation on each dimension. Measure the base once assembled before drilling your tabletop or having it cut.

For cutting the tabletop and fixing it to the flanges, our tutorial building an industrial-style desk from plumbing pipe takes you through it step by step.
Would you rather build it yourself?
Nothing here is welded: two tees, two distributors, four flanges, four sockets and eleven threaded pipes, screwed into one another. Every part can be ordered individually from our catalogue, and the pipe lengths are standard references, not special cuts.

The assembled base, for its part, arrives varnished, checked and fitted with its floor-protection inserts, which are not sold separately.
Adding castors
Castors with a 3/4″ fitting stem screw straight into the bottom sockets, with no drilling and no mounting plate: it is the same thread as the legs, nothing else is needed. You need four, one per leg.
They raise the base: take the castor's overall height minus the roughly 1.5 cm screwed into the socket, which comes to 9 cm more with a 75 mm wheel and 11.5 cm with a 100 mm wheel.
On a desk base they carry the top at around 80 cm : too high to write sitting down, but just right for an occasional standing station, a light workbench or a workshop trolley you roll from wall to wall.
| Model | Brake | Overall height |
|---|---|---|
| 75 mm wheel, rubber | no brake | 105 mm |
| 75 mm wheel, cast iron | no brake | 105 mm |
| 75 mm wheel, rubber | with brake | 105 mm |
| 75 mm wheel, cast iron | with brake | 105 mm |
| 100 mm wheel, rubber | no brake | 130 mm |
| 100 mm wheel, cast iron | no brake | 130 mm |
| 100 mm wheel, rubber | with brake | 130 mm |
| 100 mm wheel, cast iron | with brake | 130 mm |
Braked models usually go on two of the four legs, diagonally opposite.
